Ya, we’re building a hobbit hole. That probably deserves some background. We’ve talked for years about someday having a place we can go to get away. A place we can gather with people we love. Somewhere safe and far from the troubles and chaos of the rest of the world.
We finally found our Place in the summer of 2020. It is a beautiful hilly 40 acre lot in South East Idaho. There’s a large flat plateau that sits above everything else. The plateau is about 5 acres. The rest of the lot is a “Y” shaped valley. There is a knoll that sits downhill from the plateau at an elevation about 1/3 of the way between the level of the plateau and the bottom of the valley. The whole lot is covered with waist-high grass. From the top of the plateau you can see for miles in every direction and the whole landscape is rolling hills leading to tall mountains in the distance.
We want to build something really big, where ~50 people could gather for large family reunions, but we don’t have the means to do that just yet. So in the meantime we were looking for smaller more affordable options. Since the land is hilly and grassy, it wasn’t hard to image a village of hobbits living in cozy holes in the hills. So we decided building a Hobbit Hole was the right thing to do.
That’s our inspiration. I’ve got a lot more to say about how we got to this point. I’ll be making frequent posts here of our progress.
